Pradeep Mule, director of Passco Environmental Solutions Pvt Ltd. who works for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said that used condoms and sanitary napkins were biomedical wastes and had to be destroyed. “Rotary Clubs in the city have come forward to collect the napkins and destroy it in incinerators, but there is still no system to destroy the used condoms. In the future we may have to seek the help of Rotary clubs to dispose condoms also.”

Anna Nakale said in an interview with New Era on Wednesday that residents from different locations in Otjiwarongo dump their rubbish at the open area in the Ombili location just a few metres from her family’s shack residence. According to Nakale people dump pills, used condoms, used female sanitary pads, rotten food and sometimes, dead animals.

New Era inspected the dumpsite on Wednesday and can confirm Nakale’s fears. “The children in the location use the used condoms as balloons. My daughter even came with a small dead decomposed dog once,” a very annoyed Nakale told this reporter.

The biggest reason for the high rate of HIV in married and steady partners is the low use of condoms among this group.


Last week at a conference in Nairobi,  the head of the National Aids STDs Control Programme (Nascop), Dr William Maina, said  that while the rate of new HIV infections had declined by 40 per cent in the last five years, infections among steady partners is today the greatest concern and currently stands at 44.1 per cent.

Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland, has gifted the Prince William and Duchess of Cambridge its traditional “baby box,” an assortment of newborn products given to all expectant mothers in Finland. The BBC reports that the box, which is big enough to double as a bassinet when emptied, includes baby clothes, a bath towel, a teething toy, bra pads, diaper cream and condoms.
